Panasonic TC-42LD24 Review

Panasonic TC-42LD24 Review

The Panasonic TC-42LD24 is an LCD television that provides 1080p high definition with its LED backlit 42-inch screen.

The screen is glossy but users report that the Panasonic TC-42LD24 handles reflections well even in a well lit room and its wide angle of viewing means the picture can be seen clearly from several different vantage points.

Using 120Hz technology, the Panasonic TC-42LD24 takes standard 60Hz signals and converts them to 120 frames per second, resulting in smoother motion images at higher resolutions.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

The quality of the picture seems to be the strongest selling point. Several people commented the images were so clear it was almost like watching a 3D television. One reviewer wrote his normally aggressive dog was actually scared by the Kraken monster while he was watching Clash of the Titans.

Another wrote they felt like they could walk right into the picture and that scenery shots were incredible. Another user expressed his belief the picture was superior to the plasma TV he formerly used.

Yet another said there were no blurring problems despite watching college football in high definition.

The 178-degree viewing angle is also an appreciated feature. One user expressed frustration at a relative’s TV set in which the screen becomes dark unless watching it head on. He then went on to say this Panasonic set has more accurate colors and better transmission of light, resulting in a better picture even if watching it from an angle.

Several users enjoyed how easy the unit is to set up for use. One even said it virtually set itself up and reads the channels very easily. The number of connections is also popular.

Cons:

The only negative comment that could be found was one viewer was unhappy with the locations of the HDMI ports. He planned on mounting it to a wall but did not have a 90-degree HDMI cable and thought this would not work. One other reviewer hung the set on a wall, and had it connected to a Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV box.

Conclusions

Based on our research, the Panasonic TC-42LD24 is highly recommended as a good LCD TV value. The Panasonic TC-42LD24?s picture quality seems to be superior to many others and it uses less energy than other sets in its class.

The wide viewing angle means those watching it won’t have to be gathered in front to enjoy the show.

LG 42LD520 LCD

LG 42LD520 LCD Review

The LG 42LD520 is a 42-inch LCD high definition television with 1080p full HD resolution. The LC 42LD520 has a lot of extra features, and at a lower price than comparable LCD tv models.
LG’s TruMotion 120 hz technology is said to provide a clear picture with very little motion blur. (this makes it a popular model for viewing sports)

The LG 42LD520 has a 100,000 to 1 contrast ratio, for deep blacks and bold colors.  A USB drive allows an MP3 to be played through the unit and JPEG photos to be viewed.

The LG AV Mode allows viewers to choose from one of three customized settings based on what is on the screen: Sports, Cinema or Games.  The Picture Wizard allows on-screen calibration for easier picture adjustments.

There are three audio features to go along with the 20 watt speakers to make sure that the sound matches the picture. Three HDMI inputs let you connect external devices without a fuss.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • The picture is said to be “crisp, with sharp, vibrant colors.”
  • One reviewer writes that the images seem to pop off the screen when in high definition.
  • Another user was extremely pleased with the Intelligent Sensor feature that allowed the TV to automatically adjust the picture based on light conditions.
  • The screen is also said to have very little glare.

Cons:

The only real knock on the picture that could be found was that the off-center viewing was not flawless, but it wasn’t a major issue either. As for the set’s ability to broadcast fast moving events, one user wrote he watched the NBA Finals and World Cup matches with no problems. He even said he disabled the TruMotion feature because the picture for these quick paced sports was so good.

Opinions differed on the sound of the unit. One user said it was a mistake to locate the speakers in the back of the television and the sound was not very good. Another wrote the speakers sounded great and their location gave it a unique look.

One LG 42LD520 review reported problems with the uniformity of the picture and added black levels are bright and tinged with blue. Another reviewer wrote that while the HD channels look extraordinary, nothing in the standard 480 looks very good.

While some feel the LG 42LD520 falls a bit short compared with other LCD TVs of its size, the majority of those who have bought the set believe it provides an outstanding viewing experience while being less expensive than similar lcd models.

Pricing

It is clearly not a perfect LCD model but most who bought it were pleased. We believe that it is a good buy, in terms of value…lots of features for the price tag.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

1. Great Picture: Regarding picture quality, there are almost no complaints to be found.

-One reviewer wrote he had his hooked up to a high definition cable box and felt the picture quality was excellent. He also added he has not experienced any ghosting effects, which is a blurring of the picture associated with fast moving images.”

- One user commented the picture is good even when not using HD channel.

2. Good Value for the Price. Most agreed that the price of the unit is good (around $500.)

3. Easy to Set Up. Users liked the simple set up. Panasonic includes a cheat sheet to make it even easier.

Cons:

There is one consistent negative about this Vierra model: the sound quality is not the best.

The main problem seems to be the location of the speakers. They are not in the front and do not point toward the viewers. For most, this was a minor inconvenience that either was accepted or was overcome by hooking it up to a receiver.

On the extreme, one user wrote the sound on his set sporadically warbled and echoed. He added the company sent an SD card that was supposed to fix the problem, but it did not.

The only other negative comment that could be found was that it takes several seconds for a picture to appear after the tv is turned on.

Conclusions

All in all, based on the available user comments, we do recommend the Panasonic TC-L37U22 due to its picture quality, features and relatively low price. While the sound may not be anything special, many other TVs have speakers in locations similar to this one. Just keep this in mind when you buy.
